RRDVSP needs volunteers that are willing to provide support for victims in Fort Frances and the 30 kms surrounding.

Specialized training is provided.

Please call the office to register . If you miss an opportunity, we will be running trainings at different times throughout the year.  Check back for updates.

All Volunteers must complete all the Training Modules, and pass the Final Overview (exam) at the end of the training to qualify.

Certified Volunteers continue to receive training on a monthly basis.

Position Summary

After successful completion of a (standardized) volunteer training, orientation, and successful police enhancement record check, volunteers will be qualified as RRDVSP volunteers.

Once qualified, the volunteer, while working as part of a team, will respond immediately to requests from Police and other Emergency services to provide short-term emotional support and practical assistance to victims of crime, tragic circumstances, or disaster. The volunteer will ensure that referrals for longer-term assistance are provided to the victim.

Direct Service Responsibilities

  • Respond immediately to requests for victim assistance from Police and other Emergency service workers by attending on-site or an alternate safe location. On occasion, crisis assistance may be done by telephone.
  • Provide emotional support and companionship, including answering questions and providing information that will help to lessen the impact of the crisis for the victim.
  • Assure victims of confidentiality.
  • Provide practical assistance as needed. This may include transportation and/or accompanying victim to emergency services, e.g. a shelter or hospital, making phone calls or alternate arrangements as requested and required, helping to secure premises and other similar tasks.
  • Identify needs by responding to victims concerns and supply the victim with appropriate options and referrals to community services that will help them access resources for further assistance.

Volunteers will have the following qualifications:

  • Mature.
  • Responsible.
  • Have good communication skills.
  • Ability or experience to deal with crisis situations; training will be provided.
  • A willingness to commit to one full year with a minimum of two shifts per month.
  • Agree to have an enhanced Police Check done for this position.
  • Willing to be sensitive and provide emotional and practical support to victims.
  • Access to transportation when scheduled.
  • Willing to complete minimum standards training, attend meetings and additional training offered throughout the year for self-development and increase self-awareness of victims needs.
